Sometimes the ocean seems so little.
In the scheme of grand things,
The stars and all that empty space.
A thousand, million oceans worth of blackness.
And those millions of dancing lights on the sea can't measure up
to the gazillion lights above.
And the sharks aren't so scary because
what would it really mean to die?
What would it really matter?

There are much larger stars out there,
Entire planets made of salty water.
Probably fantastic fish, twice the size of any shark
And considerably meaner.
The wayward oceans where alien surfers
Glide around on air powered surfboards,
Floating across the water.
It is probably much more imressive than it is here.
Bigger, and more impressive.
Awesome,
And not like a great nail polish color.
AWE-some.
And alien ice cream vendors,
Selling flavors like snargle-fruit.
Ice cream that never melts, and has no calories,
Selling all that calorie-free ice cream to svelt alien children.
And they're all beautiful and there's no obesity epidemic.
I don't know,
Maybe they don't have Playstation or something.

Maybe the air goes right through their skin
So they don't have to breathe.
None of that raspy heaving of the chest, in and out.
No respitory infections or viral congestion.
And you can cure any ailment with a mild cream.
And of course they can fly, and pass right through walls and sing on pitch everytime.
Maybe they look through their high-powered, telescope sunglasses,
Right down at all the half-apes,
Just down from the trees, grunting and scratching at each other,
Gazing out over our puny little oceans, with funny salt water collecting in our inferior eyes.
Thinking how vast and amazing we are.
All the while, heaving away on our diaphragms.

But, despite all that inferiority,
God, sometimes it's great to be human.
And rub your toes against the rough and imperfect sand.
And to pretend that maybe, this IS awesome,
Even if its in a nail color way.

Life is just waiting around for the next disaster. The only consolation is, one of these times it'll be fatal.
